marriage is getting very, very big support from a very unlikely place: prominent republicans who now are joining forces to strike down proposition 8. dozens of prominent republicans have signed a legal brief that will submitted to the supreme court this week arguing that gay people have a constitutional right to marry, among them, signing whitman who supported prop 8 when she ran for governor, and top advisors to former president george w. bush also signing. the brief could have potential to sway conservative justices when the court hears arguments next month. last week, president obama told abc7 use congress exclusively that supporting gay marriage is the right thing to do. >> i can tell you obviously my personal view which is that same-sex couples should be treated like everyone else. >> 75 influential republicans have add their names to the list

cruz, headed up the coast we have temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60's and mid-60's in san mateo and south on the peninsula, and in downtown south san francisco, low 60's and north bay the benches also in the mid-to-upper 50's but inland at ten degrees warmer hit to upper 60's with santa rosa, napa, around 68 degrees and vallejo is 66, and on the east bay shore we have 65 at richmond and berkeley and hercules for the warmer temperatures, and san ramon 62 today and everyone else in the mid-to-upper 60's and we will look at tonight's temperatures, mid-to-upper 30's inland, and san jose and morgan hill, and santa cruz in the upper 30's and to the bay and the coast in the low do mid-40's with passioning clouds in the overnight. tomorrow, check out the temperatures, we are in the 50's through friday but we are in the mid-to-upper 60's tomorrow and low-to-mid 70's on friday. have a great day. sue? >> the situation improving just

a bit in oak, northbound 880 at oak, garbage truck accident injuries involved with glass in lanes. there were three lanes blocked, and new two lanes in the northbound direction blocked but you can see slow traffic bunching up approach the seen. take 580 and we will check back on that with a new report of an accident southbound 880 at 238, and another accident southbound at fremont in the fremont area with a motorcycle down. a look at the approach to the macarthur maze the east shore freeway, 80 is bunching up but no major problems toward the macarthur maze and san mateo bridge, same thing, starting to get in company with brake lights on the flat section but no stalls or accidents to hamper the drive to the san mateo area. >> reaction to academy awards host has been mixed, with the comic host deciding whether high will do it again.

and ambulance en route and we have word that caltrain now has delays northbound train 1303 and they are not telling us how long the delay is but a mechanical issue. no other mass transit problems. >> developing news, a coast guard plane took off moments ago and is now headed for the coast in monterey, jut off the coast to help search for a family whose sailboat disappeared with two adults and two young children. our reporter, amy hollyfield, is live at the station with the latest on the search effort. >> they have been looking out on the water all night long and as you just mentioned they are intensifying that search. look at this video we are getting in from sacramento, the crews taking off to get a better view now that the sun is out. they want to look on the water and from above to see if they can find this family, they say there is no talk of giving up although they admit they don't have much to go on.

here is a little bit of the call they got, a distress call they received on sunday afternoon. we are abandoning ship. we are abandoning ship. >> now look at what kind of vantage point they will get today. this is exclusive video that abc7 got yesterday afternoon our crews remain allowed on board the c130 as they searched for hours, miles and miles of water but, still, no sign of the family. the man who called the coast guard said that he and three people were on board and they had a life preserve irring and a cooler to float on. the coast guard believes they are looking for a man, a woman and two small children. they could not get much more information than that and they don't know the people's names or where they are from. they know the call came in from about 60 miles west of monterey on sunday afternoon and officials say the conditions were rough at the time.

i asked if and when they plan to quick looking. they say they have not talked about that but they say survivability would be tough at this point with the water 40 to 50 degrees. from overnight in oakland swat teams are wrapping up a stand off with oakland police on scene most of the night. they were overhead after it all began at 6:00 last night, and no word of the man holed up, if he is under arrest or if he got away. police brought out the swat trucks and shut down the streets. from the van can -- vatican new details on selecting the pope. the cardinals will be summoned to the vatican on friday, with the first official meeting on monday to decide when to hold a conclave to select a new pope. we learned that pope benedict

in one of the worst tourism accidents in the country's history. a bay area man visiting the city took the photos before the crash the christopher was in another balloon when it happened and according to officials there was a fire and an explosion before the balloon plunged several hundred feet from the sky. residents of japan, france, and britain, are among the dead. several schools are now canceling student trips to south america after a young bay area couple disappeared while traveling through peru. jamie neal and garrett hand were on a south american bicycle tour and they disappeared. just released video shows the couple on a bus to peru, lima, january 26, when the communication on facebook and with friends and family just stopped along with their bank activity. the state department in february issued a warn dog american tourists about possibly being kidnapped by terrorists. as a result a school in half yet

the full moon from the east bay hills this morning. santa rosa is 33 and napa is 30 with frost, and 41 in fairfield, and concord 36, and gilroy, frost at 32. in this forecast, warming trend begins today and our milder lows follow. and we will have spring warm the by the end of the week. now, you can see a lot dips and a lot of ridges but it is the high pressure that is off our coast and it will steer the storms well away from us and keep rain out of the forecast the next seven days. we will have 66 in san jose and most of the santa clara valley, and 64 to 65 on the peninsula and mid-to-upper 50's and breezy along the coast and low 60's if downtown and south san francisco, and north bay beaches in the midtown more 50's and ten degrees warmer inland, and on the east bay shore, 64 in oakland and san leandro and everyone else around 63 to 65
